Mommy School ~ Bb is for Basel and Blocks

~Kai is 3 years old~

Since we temporarily live in Basel, I decided to do Bb is for Basel on Day 1 of our Letter Bb week.  On Monday after picking Kai up from Gymboree, we explored all the Bb’s that we could find in Basel.

We saw the Bahnhof Basel SBB (Basel's main train station), the Burger King and the local Bank Coop.  We went inside the bank to take a look at one of the ATM machines.

We stopped by the local supermarket and saw butterweggli (Kai's favourite bread) and broccoli (not Kai's favourite vegetable!).  Kai bagged the bread into a bag with a biscuit stuck in his mouth.  On our way home, we saw ladybugs (which are actually beetles!).  When we got home, I showed Kai the Bebbi Sagg (the official blue garbage bag for Basel-Stadt).

We just took it easy after lunch and played with Lego blocks, which Kai received for his 3rd birthday.  We tried making the letter B out of blocks and he thought it was funny peeking through the holes!

Mommy School ~ Aa is for Ants

This happened on Thursday, 10th April which was Day 4 (and the last day) of our letter Aa week.  I told Kai that we were preparing for his 3rd birthday so we will not be “doing school” on Friday.

We started by singing the Jolly Phonics song for letter Aa (/a/, /a/, ants on my arm).  Kai really loves this song.  We then watched Hey, Little Ant  being read online but Kai wasn't at all interested and closed the iPad after a few minutes.

Dot painting A is for ant, using clothespins to clip the correct number of ants (he loves this and did it a few times!), sorting uppercase and lowercase Aa's, hunting for lowercase a (he easily found the a's with the traditional manuscript font but needed help in identifying a's in other fonts)

We made our a is for ant craft.  Kai tore green paper and glued them onto the lowercase a to make it look like a torn paper collage.  I pre-cut 3 red circles and he glued them down.  I helped him with the ant's antennae (using pipe cleaners) but he glued down the two googly eyes.  We let it dry for a day before Kai drew the ant's six legs.

Kai hunted for ants in our garden using a magnifying glass.  He found a few and wanted to step on them!

Mommy School ~ Aa is for Apples

This happened on 2nd April 2014, which was Day 3 of our Letter Aa week.

Dot painting letter Aa, matching uppercase and lowercase a, matching applesapple cut and glue, shape tracing, letter Aa maze (he found this challenging so I guess we'll have to shelve alphabet mazes for a while until he's more comforable with them)

We read Ten Apples Up on Top!  - he LOVED the story!  I cut out a photo of him and he placed 10 apple stickers on top of his photo.  He loved this!  He painted an apple afterwards.

6-piece puzzle (this was still challenging for him so we will keep working on it), number puzzle (he was able to do this independently after a few tries), colour matching (I didn't plan to do this with him as I thought it might be too difficult due to the different shades of green, yellow and red.  However, he matched all the apples perfectly!), counting apples (by transferring red pom-poms using tongs)

After picking Kai up from Gymboree, we went to the local Coop to buy apples.  We baked apple squares in the afternoon.  Here he was beating the eggs, putting diced apples into the baking bowl (while Keefe mixed) and giving all the ingredients a last stir.  He tried the apple squares after it baked in the oven but decided he didn't like it!

Mommy School ~ Aa is for Alligator

This was Day 2 of our Letter Aa week.
Kai knows this letter very well because of Zoo-Phonics' "Allie Alligator" from school.  We read Scholastic's "The Adventures of Abby Alligator" which he didn't enjoy.  I borrowed "Alligator Baby" from the school library and didn't plan to read it to him due to the long text but surprisingly, he LOVES this book!  He wanted to read this over and over again.  I used the alligator printables from Belle's preschool days.

Cutting, learning the Chinese characters for big 大 and small , one-to-one correspondence (he is getting better at this and enjoys matching the number in the swamp to the alligator cards), finger tracing numbers

I read about embedded picture mnemonics here in helping children learn letter-sound relationships more quickly.  I plan to do crafts with Kai for uppercase and lowercase letters (not sure if we can make it to Z!).  I pre-cut everything and showed him how the alligator craft looks like before he started working on his craft.  He glued everything down himself and didn't want any help from me except for putting a "special" glue onto the googly eyes.

Preschool 2 ~ "Exploring the Arts" Portfolio Sharing Session & Formal Exhibition

Keefe had his portfolio sharing session today for the “Exploring the Arts” unit, which the Preschool 2 classes have been inquiring into for the past ten weeks.  They covered both visual and performing arts, and they’ve been so busy!  Some of the highlights included a dance workshop, a puppeteer performance in German, the class’ Rumpelstilzchen performance in German, a Maori dance workshop, Fasnacht parade, pipe organ workshop, violin workshop, and a clown performance.

After the portfolio sharing session, the parents had a special viewing of the works of art done by each of the Preschool 2 class.  Everything has been so impressive, considering that all of these were done from scratch!  Keefe was very happy to show me & Belle his art work, and explain how he made them!

This was one of Keefe’s favourite artwork.  He said he worked so hard in painting the castle, and even had to “work” during quiet time.  He told me he did everything except for “hot gluing” the different boxes!  This art was made out of “junk” or recycled materials, so it was called Junk Art Sculpture.

This was Keefe's second favourite artwork.  He made the puppet (marionette) during German class.  He chose to do Peter from "Peter and the Wolf" -- he really loves this story and can remember the musical instruments associated with each character.  Keefe explained that they made the head out of clay, painted the face, and glued yarn for the hair.  The fabric costume was done by the German teacher.  The puppet was made to stand in a recycled plastic bottle (in which Keefe added sand into it).

As part of their study on 2D (flat) and 3D (fat) shapes, Keefe's class had a pottery workshop with a kindergarten teacher (Ms Cathy).  The class made cylinders to use as pencil holders and different-shaped plant holders.  They worked with clay, had it dried for a few days before adding in their designs (e.g. using a fork to scrape the surface).  They painted and glazed the clay a few days later.  The glazed ceramics were sent to another school to be fired in the kiln.  The flower pot drum was made during German class.  Keefe told me they painted the pot using paintbrush and cotton buds.  Afterwards, his teacher helped him wrapped the pot with parchment paper (in his words, "the paper you use for the oven"),  Keefe said he had to decorate his drumstick but don't know how it was made ('cos "it was already done by Frau Christine").

If there is one famous artist that Keefe could talk about, it was Vincent Van Gogh.  I remember him telling me one day on our way home that "Vincent Van Gogh cut off one part of his ear" (which was indeed true!), about "Starry Night", his bedroom and his chair.  Above is his rendition of Van Gogh's chair using oil pastels.

The class explored collage and came up with shape collages.  This 3D family was made in October 2013 during the "Families" unit but was showcased during the art exhibition.

Below are some pictures of artwork done by Keefe's classmates:
Junk art sculpture

Collage and Keefe's favourite marionettes: Super Mario and Maxi's dad (who is a football player with FCB)

If Vincent Van Gogh was a pre-schooler... Each student in Keefe's class painted their own renditions of "Starry Night", "Sunflowers", "Vincent's Chair with His Pipe", ""Vincent's Bedroom in Arles", and "Branches of an Almond Tree in Blossom"

Clay holders

Here are pictures of artwork done by the other two Preschool 2 classes:
Mosaic, shape sculptures, rainbow paintings and melted crayon art, Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten, Kandinsky inspired coloured circles and clay work, glazed ceramic bells, hand puppets, gold frames and Keith Haring inspired movement dancing pictures

Clay bells, collage (inspired by Henri Rousseau), feelings portraits inspired by Andy Warhol, Kunstmuseum paintings, 3D "skulpturen", food art (using popcorn and sweets), collage work inspired by Paul Klee

Mommy School ~ Aa is for Ambulance

We did letter Aa activities five days before Kai turned three.  I decided to do “intentional” home preschool with him to reinforce the letters/letter sounds he has learnt at Gymboree so far, to expose him to math concepts (number recognition, one-to-one correspondence, shapes, patterns, size sequencing) and other non-academic skills like pre-writing, art/craft, cutting/pasting, puzzles, cooking/baking.  We do these activities after lunch for about 45 minutes before picking Belle and Keefe up from school.  We always start our home preschool by reading a book that goes with the theme for the day, followed by printables.  We’ve had a good week and Kai looks forward to it everyday.  In his words, “I want to study.”

31.3.2014 ~ Dot painting Aa’s and painting the ambulance.  Our book for the day was "Ambulance in Action".

31.3.2014 ~ Left-to-right tracing, cutting, finger tracing number 1, colouring number 1

6.4.2014 ~ Kai wanted to "study" on a Sunday night so we did the 4-piece ambulance puzzle, sorting uppercase and lowercase letter Aa, cutting ambulances and pasting them onto the letter A

Mommy School ~ Letter Uu

We worked on Letter Uu last week, as I realised that Kai’s preschool only briefly touched on this letter (more like an hour!).  The Zoo-Phonics animal for letter Uu is Umber Umbrella Bird so I decided on an umbrella theme

Day 1 – Dot painting the umbrellas, Letter Uu vocabulary cards

Day 2 – I decided to set up learning stations (inspiration from here) so that Kai has an idea of the activities that we will be working on that day.  Kai loves this set-up!  He did everything except for the math station.

Painting the umbrella (and later on, gluing on the umbrella shapes under the painted umbrella), coluring umbrellas, dot painting the uppercase and lowercase u, lacing, 3-piece puzzle.  Kai also did left-to-right tracing and cut umbrellas to practice his scissor skills.

We had a free trial account for Reading Eggs from school (which has since expired) and Kai loves to play with the activities.  Here he is looking at pictures/words beginning with letter Uu, finding the same letter Uu object, finding all the lowercase u on the dump truck, and helping the umbrella bird search for lowercase u.
